Princeton Review Recognizes SGV Green Colleges
June 14, 2011(Print)

The 2011 edition “Guide to 311 Green Colleges,” which was recently released by the Princeton Review, included eight San Gabriel Valley Colleges. The guide features 308 higher education institutions from the United States and three from Canada that promote living and learning green to their students.

Schools were recognized in three categories: Green Guide Schools with LEED-Certified Buildings; Green Guide Schools recognized by STARS or Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS®); Green Guide Schools that are American College & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) Signatories.

College-bound students are increasingly interested in sustainability issues, and a school’s commitment to the environment often influences a student’s decision to apply or attend. According to a Princeton Review survey, 69 percent of students polled said having information about a school’s commitment to environmental issues would affect their decision-making.

The following schools were recognized in one or more of the three categories listed above:

  • Azusa Pacific University
  • California Institute of Technology
  • California State Polytechnic University, Pomona
  • Claremont McKenna College
  • Harvey Mudd College
  • Pitzer College
  • Pomona College
  • University of La Verne

Of the eight San Gabriel Valley Institutes of Higher Education to be recognized, five were highlighted in the review:

  1. California State Polytechnic University, Pomona
  2. Claremont McKenna College
  3. Pomona College
  4. Pitzer College
  5. University of La Verne
